FLASH: EDGE OF THE ABYSS – CALVA LOUISE
Standing by the edge of the abyss comes with a wave of emotions. Between determination, anxiety, the drive to overcome, and inner turmoil, Calva Louise captures that moment before the fall with Edge of the Abyss. The UK-based band holds nothing back in terms of style, energy, or identity. Quite the opposite: this new record is rich, mature, and sees the trio continuing their evolution with an ever-epic, gripping, visceral, and at times mystical sound. With a foundation equally rooted in metal and electro sounds, Calva Louise casts a spell with delicate vocals before pulling us into a raw, brutal world filled with perfectly measured guttural singing. Tunnel Vision opens the record with no mercy.

“We knew we were going to have to do this the risky way”: The inspiring resilience of Calva Louise
With all three members of Calva Louise coming from entirely different continents, there’s no other band out there with an origin story of dedication quite like theirs. As well as celebrating the release of their new album Edge Of The Abyss, the trio look back on the hardships they endured to make their dreams a reality…

In one word, Calva Louise is driven. Whether that means touring London’s pubs to hand out demo CDs or learning how to use Unreal Engine to fully realise the visual elements of their latest project’s universe, their genre-bending fourth album ‘Edge Of The Abyss’, the band’s drive to create is matched only by their ability to craft it.
“[DIY] was born out of necessity, but now it is such a part of who we are. When something needs to be done, and you don’t have the means to achieve it by other routes, you just have to figure it out yourself” Calva’s drummer Ben Parker muses on our mid-morning zoom call, “if we don’t know how to do something, lets try…it’s a never ending journey of learning and discovery.”
Calva Louise’s DIY manifesto can be seen in the dynamic keyboard designed by bass player Alizon Taho. It sits on a sliding tray and lets guitarist and vocalist Jess Allanic play the piano parts that she began to incorporate into the band's latest live shows, whilst also working around some of the logistical issues that come with the instrument. Taho begins, “Having a piano live is complicated - when Jess also play guitar and sing - because she might be stuck behind the piano the whole set, which is not great, and setting up a second mic is not a good option either. So we kind of came up with this idea where she needs to have something that she can just put away when she’s not playing the piano,” gesturing a sweeping movement with her hand.

How Calva Louise Beat the Odds & Made the Most Eclectic Rock Album of 2025 with "Edge of the Abyss"
Calva Louise is a complete enigma of a band that you will ever find. 3 band members from different corners of the globe somehow came together at the right time to achieve their dreams with their own style of music. Only problem is… it seemed like the world was against them. From living with nuns, couch surfing for years in London, working odd jobs just to get by, the world seemed to always say no to Calva Louise. But they never said no to themselves, always finding a way around every challenge in life. And with an expansive musical influence from all 3 members, they never said no to trying whatever they felt like in their music. And that is proving to be the makings of one of the most eclectic bands you will ever find. Jess, Alizon, and Ben from Calva Louise join the Chord Progression Podcast today. With the band’s 4th album, Edge of the Abyss, due out on July 11th, join us in the journey of this band that has led to an album of the year candidate in 2025. On this episode, we talk about:
-
The most wild origin story of any band we have ever seen. From 3 musicians coming from 3 corners of the world, doing whatever they need to in order to support their musical ambitions.
-
Writing “Edge of the Abyss” as an album of the year candidate with limited resources and studio time, creating a raw, unhinged, yet fluid record and sound throughout.
-
How the band has always overcome adversity every time, and how that attribute has led them to make some of the most dynamic music you will ever hear.
This is a band that you will be blown away by not only from their story, but by their music.

886) ‘EDGE OF THE ABYSS’
Written By Finnen Dart Writer’s Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
"Calva Louise returns with Edge of the Abyss - their fourth studio album and arguably their most adventurous yet. Blending metalcore with electronic synths, pop sensibilities and that unmistakable Latin-American sound that three-piece heavyweights have adopted. The result is a bilingual cyclone that rarely plays it safe. It’s heavy, chaotic and ambitious - a record that captures the intensity and complexity of Calva Louise’s sound, at their most unpredictable".
885) Calva Louise risked it all jumping off the ‘Edge of the Abyss’
- BY JON GARCIA -->

The musical concoction of Calva Louise is as improbable as their members’ journeys.
Fusing rock, nu-metal, post-hardcore, punk and electronica with a Latin American flair and virtuoso keyboards – while a massive sci-fi concept ties it all together – three musicians from separate corners of the world have united on a musical journey that’s taken them to the Edge of the Abyss and beyond.
“The essence (of the narrative) is our story,” singer, guitarist and keyboardist Jess Allanic says. “It’s the path we’ve all been through and that made us meet and made us keep doing this.

884) Staring Into The Abyss With BEN PARKER And ALIZON TAHO From CALVA LOUISE
HEAVY Music Interview Jun 25, 2025 Explicit Transcribed
25 Jun 2025 - Interview by Kris Peters - Coming together from opposing corners of the planet, Calva Louise are a band who not only benefit from the wisdom of a diverse cultural well to draw from, but also from a musical vision and delivery that far transcends most music in the modern world. To categorise their music would be doing an injustice to the rich sonic palate offered up from the talented trio, but if push came to shove, you would be safe to say theirs is a musical blending of metal, punk and electronics.
But the depth of their music goes much deeper than that. Painting an almost cinematic dimension through eclectic and boisterous bodies of sound, Calva Louise have thrown pretty much every rule book out the window, instead following their own path and vision to create a dynamic and powerful sound that is truly something fresh and unique on the shrinking landscape. After two early albums - Rhinoceros and Euphoric - it was the 2023 release of the mixtape Over The Threshold that broke Calva Louise through the barriers and into the ears of a hungry public tired of the same formulaic music.
Such was its impact, Over The Threshold reached the ears of Pendulum's Gareth McGrillen, who messaged the band on Instagram, leading to him coming on board to record Calava Louise's new album Edge Of The Abyss, which is due for release on July 11. HEAVY caught up with drummer Ben Parker and bass/vocals Alizon Taho to find out more about the new album and Calva Louise's musical journey. "I guess it's a continuous evolution," Parker replied when we asked him to tell us about Edge Of The Abyss musically.
"Our sound has been like that from the start, and this is closer to what I think we've always wanted to do. And every release we've done throughout the band's timeline has increasingly got closer to that. It's almost like a bit of a nonstop vision, and it evolves as it goes. Obviously, this album is still very much in the heavy vein - much like the last release, like probably even a little bit more so, I would say."
In the full interview, Ben and Alizon explained the DIY production process of the album, where each member recorded their parts remotely, culminating in collaboration with co-producer Mazare in Italy and Gareth McGrillen from Pendulum for additional production. They ran through the interesting concept for the album and how it follows their previous bodies of work. Talk turned to their eclectic sound and the difficulties of blending genres together in the creative process, opening track Tunnel Vision and why it was chosen to introduce Edge Of The Abyss, working with McGrillen and what he brought to the overall sound and feel of the album and more.

Calva Louise Walk ‘Edge of the Abyss’
The sprawling story of Calva Louise is captivating. The band that found each other from opposite corners of the world — Venezuela, New Zealand, and France — discovered their home and community in the UK. Their combined influences and experiences create an incredible melting pot of musicality, and with Jess Allanic’s compelling narrative vision, they’ve conceived something truly unique.
Their new studio album, Edge of the Abyss, which is co-produced by Pendulum‘s Gareth McGrillen, will be released on July 11 via Mascot Records.

Debut "Impeccable" Music Video
“Impeccable” is the fifth single to make its way out from Calva Louise‘s new album “Edge Of The Abyss“. Like its predecessors, that song features a music video directed by alternative metal band’s vocalist/guitarist Jessica Allanic. This video also continues the storyline found in the previously released video for “W.T.F.“. Allanic stated:
“‘Impeccable‘ tells the story of a young man called Jonnie, who after being deadly poisoned has no other choice but to act with impeccability in order to survive. For this, he will have to follow his double into another world, the Fractalworld, or death will strike him with certainty.
Jonnie will have to quickly understand who his double is, as well as cross over the threshold to overcome his fate.
‘Impeccable‘ is the direct sequel of ‘WTF‘, where the main character Louise has her first encounter with her double.”

Walk The Edge Of The Abyss With Cinematic New Single 'Impeccable'
May 29, 2025
If the edge of reality had a soundtrack, Calva Louise just wrote it. With new single Impeccable, the genre-fluid powerhouse returns to their ever-expanding multiverse — where punk fury, metallic riffs and electronic chaos crash into each other under a sci-fi sun. Dropped ahead of their third studio album, Edge Of The Abyss (due 11 July via Mascot Records), Impeccable is a blistering assault on the senses and the next instalment in the band’s dense, high-concept mythology. The track was co-produced with Pendulum’s Gareth McGrillen and arrives alongside a visually arresting video directed — once again — by vocalist/guitarist and polymath Jess Allanic, whose VFX-laced visions continue to evolve with every release.
Set in 1994, Impeccable picks up where earlier single W.T.F. left off, introducing Jonnie — a young man poisoned by an unknown force and forced to chase his own doppelgänger into a parallel dimension, the Fractalworld, to survive. “He has to follow his double into another world,” the band explains, “or death will strike him. Jonnie will have to quickly understand who his double is and cross over the threshold to overcome his fate.” Allanic adds: “It’s about that feeling of powerlessness that occurs when we’re in situations beyond our control.”
If the lyrics echo myth and mortality — “I follow you anywhere you go… He said to the abyss, on the edge of life” — the soundscape is anything but restrained. Impeccable blasts forward with pulverising riffs, mechanical beats, and ghostly synths that channel the chaos of living life on the brink — which, as the band would tell you, is exactly how Calva Louise came to be.
The story of Calva Louise is one of radical resilience. A global band forged in the DIY flames of the UK rock circuit, their roots stretch from Guarenas, Venezuela (Allanic), to Rouen, France (bassist Alizon Taho), to New Zealand (drummer Ben Parker). Their musical fusion is the result of cultural displacement, personal risk, and unwavering willpower.
Jess grew up under the weight of Venezuela’s socio-economic collapse. By 16, she made the move alone to France, living in a convent — where she was told off by nuns for playing System of a Down in her room — and meeting Taho in the process. The two took a gamble, moving to the UK with limited English, minimal money, and no connections. “I had one suitcase and my guitar,” she recalls. “I emigrated twice. This hurts a little less because this is where I want to be. I have nowhere to go back to.”
The early years were filled with squats, sofa-surfing, exploitative gigs, and low-budget hotels with rats. But out of that chaos came an unshakeable band identity, one that would soon take them from local gigs to Download, 2000Trees, Reading & Leeds (headlining the BBC Introducing stage), and beyond.
Edge Of The Abyss is not just a record — it’s the next chapter in a sprawling sci-fi concept album that threads together songs, characters and timelines. Every track unveils new revelations and raises fresh existential questions: What are these doubles that haunt us? Why do they follow us? And what do they want?
Past singles Lo Que Vale, Aimless, Under The Skin, and La Corriente have each pushed deeper into this narrative dimension. Through Jess Allanic’s visual direction, the music videos tie together into a cinematic universe that reflects — and distorts — reality.
“Our album is called Edge of the Abyss because that’s how we live,” says Allanic. “One misstep and everything could fall apart.” Yet despite the dystopian themes, the band’s philosophy remains one of empowerment. “Our willpower never dies. It’s been hard learning every day, but look at our friendship. We say that it’s like the path of the warrior.”
And that warrior spirit continues this summer. Calva Louise return to 2000Trees Festival on 12th July, where their raw energy and visual ferocity will no doubt spark one of the weekend’s most unmissable sets. With Edge Of The Abyss arriving the day before, festivalgoers will be among the first to witness the next phase of this daring rock odyssey.

I was there for Calva Louise though and that made me very happy. I love this band and can see big things in their future. Especially when they look so at home on a stage of this size. Considering the last time I saw them play was at the tiny venue, Omeara in 2024, they have come a long way already and you can tell that they impress a lot of people here.
Tracks like W.T.F., Third Class Citizen, Aimless, and the brand-new Tunnel Vision sound incredible and nothing is lost in a venue of this size. It turns out that Calva Louise’s music is made for places like this, and their energy is mightily infectious.
Carry on this way, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them headlining this venue in years to come. They leave to resounding cheers and shouts having made a ton of new fans.

Calva Louise burst into 2025 with the release of their relentlessly captivating new single, ‘WTF. ‘ The song delves further into their own cinematic universe.Fresh from a breakout performance at Shiprocked Festival last week alongside the likes of Parkway Drive, Nothing More, The Ghost Inside, Kid Kapichi and more, they’re setting the start of the year alight with the new single produced by Pendulum’s Gareth McGrillen along with Mazare and Calva Louise’ Jess Allanic. The video is set in January 1994, and ‘WTF’ introduces the protagonist, Louise, who is experiencing bizarre happenings inside her home. Set in the universe laid out in their previous singles, Louise encounters a feeling of dread signalling danger: someone is inside her home and stalking her.She catches glimpses of what has been stalking her: an uncanny version of herself, her “double.” We follow her as terror and courage take hold as she experiences a glitch through reality: the real world is not what she had been told. Aligning herself with those circumstances, she voluntarily accepts contact with her double, exclaiming, “WTF!”Talking about the song, Jess Allanic says, “‘WTF’ is about that feeling of powerlessness that occurs when we are in situations beyond our control. Even being stoic or positive is not enough to withstand and face the challenges thrown at us, but at the same time, we don’t want to completely give up. The song deals with that limbo of falling apart while not wanting to succumb to nihilism. It’s an angry cry at whatever forces are listening, asking: “WTF am I meant to do"

Calva Louise - "La Corriente"
“La Corriente” is U.K. trio Calva Louise’s second electro-spiked, retro-futuristic banger of the year, though it crunches just a touch heavier than their April-released “Under the Skin.”
That’s in part due to swapping out the earlier single’s classical piano flurries in favor of a more furiously groove-swerved, post-PM5K nu-dustrial aesthetic. Likewise, guitarist-vocalist Jess Allanic’s seething, Spanish language take down of an ass-kissing social vampire truly comes in for the kill.

There’s something unique about the headliner, not just because they hale from around the world. Jess left Venezuela to move to France where she met Alizon before they moved to the UK and came across Ben who himself is a English New Zealander and its the UK they now call home.
It isn’t because of their can do attitude, nothing seems to knock these guys down, every punch is rolled and they punch back harder. Its that belief they have in each other and the sheer determination to make things happen, cant buy a keyboard that slides out of the way when not in use? They’ll build one (its a genius idea for a guitar/keyboard playing front person who rocks out – if it isn’t patented they bloody well should)!
Even the backdrop ‘neon’ logo is bandmade, costs were ridiculous to have one made so they made it themselves and it looks spectacular. And then it comes to the performance and Jesus! Bobby did a fantastic job warming the crowd up but he could have just dialled it in because from the opener Belicoso they’re out to slay it tonight, Under The Skin and Square One follow amd by the time it comes to Human Becoming I’m starting to wonder how thet are sounding so big, amd I mean REALLY big.
It’s just 3 people on stage but sounds like there must be another 3 or 4 backstage filling in, its that crazy! Before they do Con Corazón Jess explains how when learning how to speak English she could “feel” the words and this song is about that begin sung mainly in her native tongue.
Third Class Citizen starts the wrap up in spectacular style firing the good sized crowd up in the pit big time and Over The Threshold sends bodies flying and Jess into the crowd before the aptly titled Feast Is Over finishes the night.

Entitled La Corriente (‘the current’ in Spanish), the song arrives in the midst of a busy touring schedule for the trio, and hears them adding a suitably raging banger into the setlist. “La Corriente is about escaping prefabricated opinions and judgments, affecting our perception of self,” reveals Jess Allanic.

Talking about the song, Allanic says, "The lyrics deal with the obstacles that arise between them as one is looking for freedom and the other is looking to perpetuate their consciousness, but the expectations are not the same for both sides."

696) The Bristol Gig Guide by Adie White - Review Calva Louise at Dareshack - June 7, 2023
"The set was fantastic at storytelling, giving us a brief glimpse of the Calva Louise of the past, present, and future. Crowd favorites “Euphoric” and “Belicoso” opened us up for a vibrant, fast-flowing set punctuated by monologues from Allanic that added substance to the creative experiences the band was drawing on. Finally hearing “Camino” live was mind-blowing, as we shifted gear into a newer, heavier sound with the latest tracks “Third Class Citizen” and “The Feast Is Over”.
By the time we reached “Oportunista,” the crowd was at fever pitch. There was a palpable sense of how lucky we were to see this band in such an intimate venue, as the next time theyreturn to this city, we guarantee it will be on a much bigger stage."
695) Leftlion by Izzy Morris - Gig Review: Calva Louise at The Bodega - June 2, 2023
"Frontwoman Jess is a force to be reckoned with. I am in awe of both her ferocious vocals, and her gorgeous tone in other, less biting places. She has the stage presence of a true rock star minus all the arrogance, being incredibly humble in between songs, making sure to show her gratitude towards their audience for all of the support.
Fans of the band should be incredibly excited for what’s to come, and fans that are only just hopping on this sci-fi metal core bandwagon are joining us at a great time."

Creativity, ingenuity and emotional catharsis: Interview with Calva Louise
And so it came to a point – it went too far. It was like the explosion of that, like, “Everybody shut the fuck up!” [Jess laughs] We’re going to do what we want, proudly and independently, and nobody’s going to tell us what to do anymore. We always wanted to go to the heavier side, since the start. But we were told, “No, you cannot do that, it’s not good for you. And if we’re going to help you, you’re going to do what we tell you. And we said, “Okay, fair.”

693) Noizze by Elliot Grimmie | Dan Hillier |FEATURES - April 23, 2023
“Oportunista is about facing the mistreatment of those who pretend to help when in reality they seek their own benefit.” Calva Louise continue their blistering foray into the world of heavier music, lashing out at all the fake friends and two faced people, the backstabbers who have nothing but their own self interest at heart. Chugging riffs and pounding drums make up the bulk of the track here, with a Final Fantasy soundtrack style keyboard melody making an appearance mid track. The song is angry, without sacrificing its more melodic moments that allow room for the music to ebb and flow between all out rage and tension building. This track doesn’t tie in as directly to the story Calva Louise have been weaving with previous releases ‘Third Class Citizen’ and ‘Feast Is Over’, but it does still serve as a key track in the bands musical evolution, in their career evolving through punk and indie-rock elements, to incorporating progressive and synth elements until this new era, where they combine all of this into hardcore and metalcore tinged bangers, Calva Louise are soaring to new heights, propelled by their own incredible ability to master all kinds of sounds and fuse it into something only they could create. – Elliot Grimmie

691) LOUD UNITY - April 4, 2023
"Very good clean vocals and insane harsh vocals. Calva Louise released two new singles for an upcoming album and that should be a real banger, can’t wait to hear it."
690) Impact Nottingham by Izzy Morris - March 28, 20237
"Calva Louise are returning to Nottingham in May for a simply unmissable performance at Bodega. Their eclectic blend of indie, alternative and punk translates into a mind-blowing blast of energy for any audience member. Their high-octane, electrifying spirit is extremely gripping, with powerful wild screams from vocalist Jess Allanic, bulky synths and ferocious drumbeats ripping through the room. A particular favourite of mine was actually Feast is Over, a track that was released four days before their performance. Moving between devastating cries of ‘F*** YOU!’ and delicious harmonies, this track offered a vengeful sense of catharsis against people who treat others with no respect."

"For the band to have taken such a huge leap in their sound and hit the ground running, you’d think this was the style of music they’ve been putting out from the get go. Only time will tell the plethora of sounds this band may yet be capable of, and we await with bated breath to see what one of the UK’s most exciting young bands will do next."

*685) The Mic - The University of Nottingham's Official Music Magazine by Roxann Yus - January 23, 2023
"Calva Louise have been one of my favourite bands for about two years now. I fell in love with their fusion of culture and music, something that isn’t seen much in rock music. This track takes this fusion and makes a fire. It’s angry, purposeful, and political. On top of that, they situate this angst within a dystopian storyboard, marking how deeply backward society is on the issue of migration and acceptance. They’re an extremely talented group: they create such meaningful music whilst pairing it with the art of film and special effects. I look forward to the next opportunity I have to see the band live and discover whether they have found a way to include all of their endless talents into their live performances."
